Coaching Distinctively Adventist Sports

Course Summary

This course will cover PRINCIPLES to help the individual coach and the leaders at the school establish and clarify the mission and purpose for their interschool sports program (providing a firm foundation), and equip them to intentionally put those values into practice with their sports teams.

What Will I Learn?

You will learn the overarching values that provide a distinctively Adventist sports program in Adventist schools. This includes:

  • Christ-centered Theological Truths (the ‘Why’)
  • Biblically-based Philosophical Principles (the “When? Where? and “with Whom?”)
  • Strategically relevant, efficiently effective Methodological Models (the “What?”)
  • The value of reflective thought (and others’ insights) to review the Alignment of your values and your actions.

What Do I Need To Know?

As of the beginning of the school year 2018, this course is a requirement of the North American Division Office of Education (NADOE) for all employed and volunteer coaches participating in interscholastic sports associated with an Adventist school. Completion Certificates should be given to your designated School Administrator. This course is worth 0.5 CEUs

Instructor

Robert K. Thomas

Dr. Robert K. Thomas is a professor at La Sierra University in the Health & Exercise Science department. He previously taught at Atlantic Union College for 13 years where he also coached their NAIA volleyball team and was recognized as the NAIA District V “Coach of the Year.”

 

He has served in a variety of leadership positions including president of the Western Society for Kinesiology & Wellness, chair of La Sierra University’s Faculty Senate, and executive director for the SDA Health, Physical Education, & Recreation Association.

 

Dr. Thomas has established two lines of research:  1) Fitness-based research including fitness and academic performance; the effects of repetition speed on strength development; and fitness levels of students in high schools and college (and as Principal Investigator for the national PhysicalGenesis fitness study); and 2) history and philosophy of SDA physical education.

 

Dr. Thomas has given scholarly presentations for several organizations including the Western Society for Kinesiology & Wellness; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance; the 2nd International Congress for Physical Education at the Adventist University of Sao Paulo, Brazil; and the Seventh-day Adventist Health, Physical Education, Recreation Association.  He has also presented at other events such as the Health & Fitness Symposium at Andrews University; the Summer Institute for Brain Learning at La Sierra University; and at the NAD K-12 Teacher Convention in Nashville.

 

Dr. Thomas been recognized in several ways:  receiving the “Distinguished Faculty Service Award” at LSU; Anees Haddad “Excellence in Faculty Governance” award at LSU; “Faculty of the Year” award for Service-Learning at LSU; Dr. G. Arthur Broten “Young Scholars” award at the Western Society for Kinesiology & Wellness; Who’s Who among America’s Teachers (4 times); the Zapara “Excellence in Teaching” award while at Atlantic Union College; and NAIA District V “Coach of the Year” for volleyball.

Course Contributers

Alex Adams

Alex Adams has been coaching since 2006. He has taught or coached at Lodi Academy, Escondido Adventist Academy, and Hinsdale Academy before joining the faculty at Madison Academy in 2013 where he is the Athletic Director, Math and PE Teacher. He earned his B.S. in Kinesiology and a Masters in Secondary Education.  Coach Adams is also a Google Certified Level 1 & 2 Certified Educator as well as a Flipped Certified Educator. Coach Adams wants to inspire confidence and motivation in people to become physically literate so we can be better equipped to change the world.

Steve Adams

Steven Adams is proud to be a product of Adventist Education. Educated in an era when sports availability in Adventist schools was limited to intramurals and the annual alumni basketball game, he regularly discussed and debated the merits of sport in Adventist schools.  A lifetime of these discussions and the research to inform his ideas became the foundation of his career.  He has worked since 1992 as a teacher, coach, professor and athletic director in Adventist and public education at the high school and university levels. He owns and operates supporting ministry schools in Asia and is the chairman of an education consulting company.

Sharon Aka

Sharon is the Associate Director of the Adventist Learning Community. In her current role, she oversees the construction of continuing education and training courses. Sharon is a Registered Nurse, and has a degree in physical education. She is a PhD student at Andrews University.

Lucio Camacho

Lucio Camacho earned his M.S. at Azusa Pacific University, and holds a Professional SDA Credential.  He is the Loma Linda Academy CIF Athletic Director for Varsity sports, and has taught Physical Education and Health. He has more than 20 years of service, including 15 at Mesa Grande Academy.

Matt Cantrell

Matt Cantrell has been the Sacramento Adventist Academy Athletic Director where he also served as the Health and PE teacher. He earned his B.S. in Health and Physical Education with a minor in History at Walla Walla University. He earned his M.A. in Coaching and Athletic Administration at Concord University in Irvine. He joined the SAA staff in 2012, and moved to Denver in summer 2018. He served effectively as chair of the SDA Flag Football rules committee in 2017-2018 to produce the most current version of SDA-SARC Flagball rules.

Daanan Foster

Daanan Foster is the grade 7 Bible & P.E. teacher at Spring Valley Adventist Academy in Centerville, Ohio. He is also the Athletic Director and Grade 7 Homeroom Teacher.

Kristine

Fuentes

Mrs. Kris Fuentes earned a BA in English from Southern Adventist University in 1994.  She taught high school English at Escondido Adventist Academy near San Diego, California for seven years and then served as K-12 Principal for another 12 years.  During her early career she completed a Masters Degree and Educational Specialist Degree in Administration and Leadership at La Sierra University.  In 2013, she accepted the call to serve as principal at Madison Academy, her high school alma mater.  In addition to her leadership role, she enjoys reading, water skiing, music, and spending time with her family.

Rob Gettys

Ozark Adventist Academy’s athletic director, graduated from SAU with a Bachelor of Arts in health, physical education and recreation. He also holds a Master of Arts in educational administration and leadership. He believes family is important and shares the family goal of visiting every state.

Frank Jones III

Frank Jones III is principal at Forest Lake Academy, his alma mater. He says an important aspect of his job is the relationships he has with his students. A teacher believed in him when he was young, and he strives to live a Christ-like example every day. FLA has one of the larger athletic programs in the Adventist education system.

Kyle Kay

Kyle Kay is the PE Teacher/Athletic Director at Fraser Valley Adventist Academy in British Columbia, Canada. He is a dynamic, energetic teacher with a genuine interest in students’ spiritual, cognitive, and social growth. He combines a strong passion for physical education, intramural and varsity athletics to prepare and inspire students to pursue life-long physical fitness. His coaching specialties are volleyball and soccer.

Matt Lee

Matt Lee is the PE Teacher at Pacific Union College Elementary School.  He has been active in the NAD’s Health & Physical Education summer curriculum committee for several years, and seeks to make a difference in the lives of his students and community.  He was voted Adventist Physical Education “Teacher of the Year” in 2017.

Randy Lonto

Randy Lonto was born in Takoma Park, MD. His hobbies include golfing, cycling, camping, fishing, woodworking, dodgeball and kickball. He received his B.S. in PE at Andrews University in 1991. He currently teachers at Ruth Murdoch Elementary School in Berrien Springs, MI. He was voted Adventist Physical Education “Teacher of the Year” in 2018, and has served as president for the SDA Health, Physical Education, Recreation Association (SDA-HPERA).

Stacy Nelson

Dr. Nelson brings more than thirty years of experience in leadership development to the VitalSmarts faculty. A recipient of the Zapara award for excellence in teaching, Stacy consistently receives accolades for his charismatic presentation style and highly effective training design. Serving as a personal coach to many hospitals, educational institutions, and corporate executives, Stacy is frequently invited to deliver keynote speeches at local and national conventions. Stacy has become a trusted leader in corporate training and organizational performance. He helps teams and companies increase organizational effectiveness, achieve bottom-line results, and become measurably more vital.

Nestor Osorio

Nestor Osorio is the Athletic Director for Forest Lake Academy in Apopka, FL.  He has served as president for the SDA-HPERA, and is working on his PhD in Leadership.

Bob Paulson

Bob Paulson, Ph.D., professor, began teaching at PUC in 1994. He works in areas of aquatics, recreational running, cross country, track and field, sport officiating, volleyball, basketball, first aid and injury prevention, technology and pedagogy, intramural recreation, and sport psychology. He has taught at the academy level, coached various teams, served as president of the Adventist Virtual Learning Network, and received NAIA California Pacific Conference Coach of the Year for Cross Country awards. He also does projects and presentations in his field and enjoys spending time with his family, recreational running, water sports, digital photography, home projects, and listening to music. Tamara

Ritterskamp

Tamara Ritterskamp teaches Physical Education and Health at Forest Lake Academy in Apopka, FL.  She has been active in the NAD’s Health & Physical Education summer curriculum committee for several years, and has helped with the development of teacher resources for CREATION Health. She served as Secretary for the SDA-HPERA in 2018.

Datha Tickner

Datha Tickner has served as principal at Orangewood Academy and Loma Linda Academy. She currently is an Associate Superintendent of Education at Southeastern California Conference.

Keith Waters

Keith Waters is the Secondary Associate Superintendent of Education for the North Pacific Union.  He has chaired or co-chaired the NAD’s Health & Physical Education summer curriculum committee for several years. This summer committee has produced updated Standards for Health, and for Physical Education, has supported the PhysicalGenesis fitness study (2015-2018), and the CREATION Health course (and its teacher resources).

Williams

Vashon Williams is assistant professor of Health and Exercise Sciences at Oakwood University. He has coached at middle school, high school, and college levels.

Doug Zimmerman is vice-principal and physical education teacher at Escondido Adventist Academy. He earned his degree at La Sierra University in Physical Education and Health. He taught for seven years at San Fernando Valley Academy as the Athletic Director and coach of all sports. In 2003 he moved to EAA and has been impacting students there since then.  He served as president for the SDA-HPERA, and has been active in the NAD’s Health & Physical Education summer curriculum committee. He was voted Adventist Physical Education “Teacher of the Year” in 2014.

John Brunt

John Brunt has served as Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Walla Walla University. He is an author of several works, including the book “A Day for Healing” (about the Sabbath), and is a retired senior pastor of Azure Hills Church in Grand Terrace, CA.

Marlene

Ferreras

Marlene Mayra Ferreras is the daughter of a single parent Cuban refugee mother. Born and raised in southern California, Marlene was a pastor for 14 years in the Seventh-day Adventist denomination and was ordained by the Pacific Union Conference in October 2012. Her academic interests are at the intersection of social science and theology.

Marlene's research studies the identity and eschatology of indigenous female maquila workers in Yucatan, Mexico. She is interested in the strategies women use to resist systems of violence and oppression for the purpose of providing spiritual care that assists women in identifying and developing preferred futures.

Oliver Glanz

Oliver Glanz studied both theology and philosophy. His graduate studies in theology focused on Bible translation. In 2006 Glanz graduated with an MA in Christian Studies on Science and Society from the VU faculty of philosophy. Oliver Glanz is part of the ETCBC research team in Amsterdam and working for the "Bridging Data and Tradition: The Hebrew Bible as a Linguistic Corpus and as a Literary Composition" project.  Currently he is writing the commentary volume on the book of Jeremiah for the new SDA International Bible Commentary.

 

Vaughn Nelson

Vaughn Nelson grew up as a pastor's kid in eastern and western Washington state, Southern California, and Nebraska. He studied at Union College and La Sierra University.  As a pastor Vaughn is passionate about partnering with people in exploring and discovering ever better ways of responding to God's grace with our hearts, our minds, and the way we live our lives. As a triathlon veteran, he recognizes the value of being physically active and being careful with his body temple.

Zane Yi

Davide Sciarabba is originally from Italy. He is an ordained pastor who served the church as chaplain, professor, youth pastor and senior pastor in three different Adventist Universities (Florence, Italy; Collonges, France; Sagunto, Spain). He is earning a PhD in Religion in Systematic Theology with emphasis in Ethics at Andrews Univesity. He is married to Sonia Badenas (Assistant professor of French at AU) and they have two children, Flavia and Marco.

 

Zane Yi joined the Loma Linda faculty in 2013 after earning his doctorate degree in philosophy at Fordham University. He also holds master’s degrees in philosophy from Loyola Marymount University (2004) and a master’s degree in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary (2005). He has also worked as a campus minister on a variety of university campuses and served churches in Tennessee, Southern California, New York and Georgia, gaining experience in leading urban, diverse, ecumenically-minded, and service-oriented congregations.
