Captions<\/strong> are simply text over video. You can create closed<\/strong> or open captions,<\/strong> the main difference being that viewers can turn off closed captions,<\/strong> while open captions<\/strong> are always on screen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can use these steps to insert subtitles in different languages<\/strong> or captions for the hearing impaired.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take a look at how to add captions in Adobe Premiere Pro<\/strong> with a few simple steps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1: Create a New Caption File<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Click the New Item button<\/strong> at the bottom of the Project Panel<\/strong> and select Captions<\/strong>. The new caption file will be a video file, and the settings will match with the current sequence you have open. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this tutorial we will work with open captions, but you can choose closed captions, ex. CEA-608 CC1, <\/strong>but you will be limited to a certain type of font and style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are the settings for open captioning<\/strong>. Change the settings to 29.97 fps<\/strong> as most ALC videos are shot and edited in 29.97 fps.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Select the correct caption type. Drag the Caption<\/strong> video file onto the timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*Be sure to Enable<\/strong> the Closed Captions Display<\/strong> in the Program Monitor.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Click on Settings<\/strong> below the program monitor and drag over Closed Captions Display <\/strong>and select Enable<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure you do this or you will not<\/strong> be able to see the caption edits in your program monitor.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Step 2: Adding, Timing, and Formatting Your Captions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Select the Caption file<\/strong> and use the Caption Panel<\/strong> to add text, time,<\/strong> or to format your text.<\/strong> If you can\u2019t see the Caption Panel,<\/strong> simply go to the window menu, and select Captions.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Click the Plus button <\/strong>to add a new text<\/strong> box.<\/strong> Type the caption you want in the box and keep adding more boxes, adding more captions. Make sure your In<\/strong> and Out<\/strong> points match up with the spoken word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can view the captions you create in the timeline by expanding the video track<\/strong> on your timeline. Simply drag out the purple captions video track.<\/strong> The black in and out points on the captions video track<\/strong> are your captions you have created. They will be separated by each caption box you have created. You can drag them out and move them around according to their times as well. In addition, with open captions<\/strong>, you have a few extra options, such as additional fonts and size adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3: Export<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the Export Settings<\/strong> dialog box, use the Caption<\/strong> tab to export the captions as Burn-in<\/strong> or as a Sidecar<\/strong>file. A Burn-in will naturally \u201cburn\u201d the captions into the video file, and viewers will not have the option to turn them off. When you export as a Sidecar<\/strong> file, you will be provided with an additional .scc file<\/strong> which you can upload or deliver with your video files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, we worked with “open captions<\/strong>” which means we only have the option to burn the captions into the video.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

If you worked with “closed captions”<\/strong>, ex. CEA-608 CC1<\/strong>, you do<\/em> have the option to export as a sidecar<\/strong> file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
